NBBB has been building boats on beautiful Whidbey Island since 1964. We are in Freeland, WA where we produce state-of-the-art vessels; tugs, ferries, fire boats, fishing vessels, barges, dinner boats, along with many other sophisticated ships. We build an astonishing variety of vessels and lead in adopting innovative marine technology to serve our customers' needs. We are seeking a Engineer for the Shipyard’s contracted work in both  new construction as well as overhaul projects.



The Project Engineer will be the lead engineer for a specific project or projects, coordinating the creation and flow of accurate and timely information for engineering and ensuring review, consistent with owner specifications and in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform stability and structural studies and analyses, up to and including USCG or Class submittals.
• Participate in all stages of new vessel design, performing engineering calculations and creating and updating documentation, developing conceptual designs, providing detailed production drawings and fully populated 3D models.
• Interface with external professional parties such as engineering firms, other consulting naval architects, vendors, and class/government entities.
• Provide support in regulatory submittals, responses, and communications.
• Perform ship inspections and visit projects to ensure accuracy and quality of new construction, repair, and refit projects.
• Prepare calculations and drawings for repair, conversion, and retrofit projects, including but not limited to: Structural modifications, Stability assessments and submittals, Electrical systems, piping systems, fire boundary designs and fire load calculations, HVAC, and Other auxiliary systems.
• Responsible for all engineering of project design review, revisions, and additions from bid estimate to customer delivery.
• Review all production work packages and provide support as required to answer questions from the shipyard floor
• Obtain regulatory approval of all drawings and deliverables and support QC department in dealing with local inspectors
• Develop and maintain engineering budget and schedule and interface with Production Supervisors and Scheduling department to develop an integrated engineering project schedule
• Develop and/or review preliminary and contract level design packages and specifications
• Determines project specifications through analysis of project plans, customer requirements, contract elements, cost and technical studies.
• Coordinates with estimating, project management, and sales in the development of project, estimates, bids and initial work break down structure.
• Travel to job sites within the US and internationally as needed.



Mandatory Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in naval architecture, marine engineering, or equivalent required.
• Experience with both aluminum and steel vessels design and construction is required.
• Strong hands-on experience in vessel engineering and naval architecture is required.
• Technical competence in preparing calculations and performing stability assessments
• Computer skills including AutoCAD, 3D modeling software such as Solid Edge, Rhino, etc., and Naval Architecture software such as Ship Constructor.
• Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis), CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), and other computer-based simulation analysis required.
• Strong familiarity with USCG Subchapter T, K, and H, ABS rules and regulations required.
• Knowledge and understanding of all shipyard trades required.
• Knowledge of vessel technical systems, engineering, and structural design required.
• Experience with Microsoft Office/365 and organizational documentation file management systems.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to projects and ports in the U.S./internationally.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of marine engineering and design, marine-related equipment, ship repair and construction techniques; sequencing of new construction and ship repair activities; and shipyard safety practices
• Demonstrated Problem Solving and Analytical Skills
• Excellent Written and Oral Communication

Preferred Experience and Credentials
• 5+ years of experience in Naval Architecture is desired.
• Knowledge of tonnage regulations and SOLAS preferred.
• Experience in administering contracts with Buy America" requirements.
• PE in Naval Architecture and PMP certification (or equivalent) is desired.
• Demonstrated leadership as a Project Engineer
