Paint Department Foreman

NBBB has been building boats on beautiful Whidbey Island since 1964. We are seeking candidates for a Paint Department Foreman.   Paint and Coating is an art form – and  we invite you to consider joining our team of artists who create the needed surface coatings and protections and provide finishing touches on our vessels.  We transform vessels from a state of unfinished works in progress to awe-inspiring maritime masterpieces. Our trade’s advances in science and materials have created a need for us to acquire an accomplished paint craftsman who can develop the skills and careers of our internal paint department employees (from Apprentice through leads).  Our work has required that we become safety and environmental specialists in a manner that protects and preserves our environment. 



The  Paint Department Foreman will lead the efforts of a team of Paint Department Leads, Journeymen and Apprentices in the Paint trade performing full range blasting and sanding duties for the shipyard’s new construction and service work.  The Paint Department Foreman is also instrumental to helping  NBBB meet its compliance obligations to environmental enforcement and regulatory agencies and to assuring a safe work environment for all NBBB employees.

• Provides supervision, to include assignment to tasks, assuring completion of tasks within deadlines, resolving conflicts, and motivating optimal performance, to assigned employees
• Leads and communicates company safety culture and policies. Leads craft safety meetings. Holds employees accountable for demonstrating acceptable safety practices. Provides input to ways to instill attention to safety among all employees.
• Works closely with the project managers or construction managers for elements in the paint discipline; handles planning including specifying staffing needs and scheduling, tools, materials, equipment, and subcontracts.
• Plans and projects manpower requirements to support paint activities and meet relevant deadlines and delivery commitments.
• Coordinates regulatory agency compliance for Paint and Insulation.
• Ensures that all painters and apprentice painters are qualified to perform their work and accomplish work in accordance with proper practices and within specifications.
• Assist estimating department as required for bidding work.
• Troubleshoots wide range of paint equipment malfunctions and effect remedies that lead to lasting improvements in paint department's readiness.
• Pass down knowledge to apprentices and to Journeyman II by coaching them how to be better coaches /mentors within the trade.
• Assists in planning job (Design, specs, procedure, process, schedule, materials, interprets technical drawings, and schedule) for completing the job.


• 4 years directly related experience or 8 years directly related to paint operations, preferably in a ship building/ship repair experience
• Experience and skills acquired over career to establish status of "Go-to Person" in Paint.
• Work Product and Work Ethic inspires confidence and commitment to follow from co-workers
• Willingness to learn and apply state of the industry practices in hazardous waste transportation, hazardous/toxic waste management, and regulation of hazardous/toxic materials.
• Certification in NACE (C-7 or C-14) or SSPC is preferred, but will accept one with desire and aptitude to achieve certifications within short time period.
• Ability to advance the paint trade at NBBB or in industry through serving as instructor in apprenticeship program, or role in industry association, or on other special projects.
• Fully knowledgeable and proficient of paint classes
• Fully proficient in Microsoft Excel and WORD.
• Ability to learn cloud-based application systems for time entry and schedule.
• Ability to work variable work schedules that are driven by demands of the project, and customer timelines.
• Effective leadership, communication, and team-building skills.
• Demonstrates proficiency in solving problems, identifying their causes, and implementing corrective action.
• Proficient in personal time management, and task organization with a disciplined adherence to production schedule.
• Must be able to attend classes and other professional development events to maintain the effectiveness of our environmental plan. (e.g., 49 CFR and /or RCRA regulations on hazardous waste.)
Preferred Requirements
• BA/BS plus 2 years in a related field or AA/AS plus 4 years directly related experience preferred
• Previous experience in Paint operations in leadership role preferred.
